چکیده

This study develops a geographical information system (GIS) approach for automated processing of the Next Generation Weather Radar (NEXRAD) Stage III precipitation data. The automated processing system, implemented by using commercial GIS and a number of Perl scripts and C/C++ programs, allows for rapid data display, requires less storage capacity, and provides the analytical and data visualization tools inherent in GIS as compared to traditional methods. In this paper, we illustrate the development of automatic techniques to preprocess raw NEXRAD Stage III data, transform the data to a GIS format, select regions of interest, and retrieve statistical rainfall analysis over userdefined spatial and temporal scales. Computational expense is reduced significantly using the GIS-based automated techniques. For example, 1-year Stage III data processing ( 9000 files) for the West Gulf River Forecast Center takes about 3 days of computation time instead of months of manual work. To illustrate the radar precipitation database and its visualization capabilities, we present three application examples: (1) GIS-based data visualization and integration, and ArcIMS-based web visualization and publication system, (2) a spatial–temporal analysis of monsoon rainfall patterns over the Rio Grande River Basin, and (3) the potential of GIS-based radar data for distributed watershed models. We conclude by discussing the potential applications of automated techniques for radar rainfall processing and its integration with GIS-based hydrologic information systems. r 2004 Elsevier Ltd. GIS-based spatial precipitation estimation using next generation radar and raingauge data

Precipitation is one important input variable for land surface hydrologic and ecological models. Next Generation Radar (NEXRAD) can provide precipitation products that cover most of the conterminous United States at high resolution (approximately 4 km 4 km). There are two major issues concerning the application of NEXRAD data: 1) the lack of a NEXRAD geo-processing and geo-referring program and...

Automated Generation of Visual Simulation Databases Using Remote Sensing and GIS

This paper reports on the development of a strategy to generate databases used for real-time interactive landscape visualization. The database construction from real world data is intended to be as automated as possible. The primary sources of information are remote sensing imagery recorded by Landsat's Thematic Mapper (TM) and digital elevation models (DEM). Additional datasets (traffic networ...

5b.10 Initial Implementation of Super-resolution Data on the Nexrad Network

Legacy-resolution base data on the NEXRAD network consists of reflectivity on a 1 km-by-1 deg polar grid and Doppler velocity and spectrum width on a similar 250 m-by-1 deg grid. It has been shown through simulations that mesocyclone and tornado signatures can be detected at ranges 50% greater than the current detectable ranges using higher-resolution base data on a 250 m-by-0.5 deg grid (Brown...

GeoSpatial Data Analysis Using Markov Models

The advances in survey and data collection techniques over the last decade have dramatically enhanced our capabilities to collect terabytes of geographic data on a daily basis. However, the wealth of geographic data cannot be fully realized when information implicit in data is difficult to discern. This confronts us with an urgent need for new methods and tools that can intelligently and automa...

Global estimation of precipitation using opaque microwave bands

This thesis describes the use of opaque microwave bands for global estimation of precipitation rate. An algorithm was developed for estimating instantaneous precipitation rate for the Advanced Microwave Sounding Unit (AMSU) on the NOAA-15, NOAA-16, and NOAA-17 satellites, and the Advanced Microwave Sounding Unit and Humidity Sounder for Brazil (AMSU/HSB) aboard the NASA Aqua satellite. The algo...
